Salzalpensteig from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Königssee

On Historic Paths Through Bavaria’s Mountains 🥾🏔️💙

This alpine hike impressively combines nature, history, and a true long-distance trekking feeling. Starting from the glistening Lake Chiemsee, you will follow the trails of salt through the Bavarian Alps and discover a landscape full of contrasts 🌊🌲. Gentle lakeshores, historic salt-mining towns, idyllic alpine pastures, and striking mountain ranges alternate, making every day of hiking a new experience.

The start at Lake Chiemsee already sets the mood for the days to come. Quiet lakeshore paths, typical Bavarian farmsteads, and shady forests accompany you on your way 🐄🌿. Soon, the historic salt trails lead higher into the Chiemgau Alps, where wide vistas open up and the panorama becomes increasingly alpine ⛰️✨. A special highlight is the cable car ride up the Hochfelln, whose summit offers a magnificent panoramic view over lakes and mountains.

Again and again, turquoise mountain lakes like Lake Taubensee or the idyllic Lake Thumsee invite you to take a refreshing break 💧😌. Gurgling streams, small waterfalls, and quiet nature reserves provide soothing variety along the way. In towns like Ruhpolding or Inzell, you can experience the relaxed Bavarian way of life, perhaps with a cozy stop for a meal and a cold drink 🍺☀️.

On your way, you will also cross significant landmarks of salt history. A visit to the Old Salt Works (Alte Saline) in Bad Reichenhall brings the "white gold" to life and gives the hike a special cultural depth 🧂🏛️. Afterwards, the path continues along the historic brine pipeline trails, always accompanied by magnificent views of the Watzmann and the Steinernes Meer 🌊⛰️.

Finally, you reach your destination at the emerald-green Lake Königssee in the Berchtesgaden National Park. Nestled between steeply rising rock faces, the lake looks almost surreally beautiful 🌊🏞️. Here ends a hiking journey that uniquely combines exercise, nature, and history—a trip that will resonate with you long after it’s over.

The Salzalpensteig (Salt Alps Trail) from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Königssee is a premium hike for everyone who loves diverse landscapes and enjoys moving step by step through Bavaria’s alpine variety 💚🥾. A tour that challenges, rewards, and inspires in equal measure.

Summary

Facts about the Alps

Climate in the Alpine region

The Alpine arc extends over a total of 1,200 kilometres. So it isn’t surprising that climatic conditions can vary depending on the Alpine state and region. The Alps are considered to be one of the most important climatic divisions in Europe and subdivide the following climatic provinces: the Atlantic, the Pannonian climatic province and the Mediterranean climatic area. In the northern Alps, the climate is very similar to that in the neighbouring flatlands, whereas in the southern Alpine areas there are Mediterranean climatic conditions with mild winter months and hot summer periods. The eastern areas in the Alps are characterized by a continental-Panonnian wine-growing climate and the inner-Alpine valleys such as the Vinschgau, Carinthia or Valais are dry. The most important influences are the mild westerly winds with humid air masses from the Atlantic, the cool polar air from the north, the dry continental air masses from the eastern areas, as well as the warmer, southern currents.

Alpine Cuisine

In culinary terms, the Alpine cuisine can also boast a variety of traditional recipes and numerous regional influences. As a real cultural asset, alpine cuisine is shaped by everyday rural life in the remote mountain villages and alpine pastures. Even then, it was important to pay attention to foods that could be produced directly on the farm and have a long shelf life, such as milk and grain products, as well as dried or smoked meat. Due to the wide expanse of the Alpine region, the dishes are also strongly influenced by the cuisine of the respective region. On a culinary journey through the Alps, you can find Emmental cow’s milk cheese in Switzerland, bacon from Tyrol or South Tyrol, dried meat from the Swiss canton of Valais, Bavarian sauerkraut in Germany, the best types of wine from South Tyrol or pine schnapps from Austria. It was particularly important for mountain farmers and shepherds to eat a diet rich in carbohydrates in order to have enough strength for the physically demanding work on the alpine pastures. Bread, pasta and pastries such as Buchteln or Schlutzkrapfen were an important part of Alpine cuisine and are still popular today.
