As a fairy tale king, he entered German history. In 1977, a hiking trail, the König-Ludwig-Weg (King Ludwig Trail), was established in memory of this Bavarian ruler, leading through a landscape that King Ludwig II. was particularly fond of. This path connects Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles, where he spent his youth, with Lake Starnberg, where King Ludwig II. lost his life.

The trail leads through a magnificent Alpine foothills landscape, beginning at Lake Starnberg and ending in the Allgäu region at the Austrian border in Füssen. It touches not only scenic attractions such as the Upper Bavarian lakes, Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee, or the romantic Ammer Gorge near Rottenbuch, but also art-historical sites, such as the impressive baroque churches in Andechs, Dießen, Rottenbuch, and the world-famous Wieskirche. The monasteries of Andechs, Wessobrunn, and Steingaden, which lie along the way, bear witness to the ancient culture of this region.

For about 125 km, hikers follow the Lech from its source near the Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, all the way to the Lechfall in Füssen in the Allgäu region. Along the way, it connects five regions and two countries with its traditions and stories. The long-distance hiking trail, certified as a "Leading Quality Trail", leads past one of the largest ibex colonies in Europe, a waterfall that magically dries up and re-emerges every year, a spectacular pedestrian suspension bridge, and finally to the Bavarian royal castles. The magically turquoise river shapes the flora and fauna, and many breeding bird species and wild orchids form one of the most species-rich habitats in Central Europe.

From historic Landsberg, the path leads via Epfach, with its remarkable Roman museum, and Kinsau up to the Lechleite, revealing a magnificent view of the Alps chain before continuing via Hohenfurch to the Schwalbenstein and on to Schongau, with its medieval old town situated on a Lech Umlaufberg (a mountain formed by a river meander). The next highlight along the way is the Litzau Loop, an originally preserved meander of the Lech. Continuing along the Urspringer Lech reservoir, the route proceeds to Lechbruck. The path now winds gently through the hilly landscape towards the south to Roßhaupten and further along the shore of the Forggensee, offering a wonderful view of the Ammergau and Tannheim Alps, into Füssen, where the destination of the tour, the Lechfall, is finally reached.
